The Fashion Communication Students of North West School of Design (NWSD) were assigned to plan and direct a fashion shoot for collections from the 2019 PFF. I will be telling you more about what goes into planning and directing a fashion shoot.
Although we were each responsible for our own collection, we wouldn’t have been able do the shoot alone. Everyone had a certain job that they oversaw from model snack to dressing room “manager” to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
When it comes to planning a fashion shoot there’s a lot of small details that you must pay attention to. You need to decide what setting/location you want and if it’s going to go with what you’re shooting. You need to create a shot list for each look that you are going to be shooting. A shot list contains the type of make-up that you’re going to use, how you want their hair to be styled, what type of pose you want them to do, what accessories they are going to be wearing and most importantly how the garment looks that you’re going to be shooting.
You need to run your shot list by you’re photographer and get their opinion on it so that you can make the necessary adjustments and modifications before the time if it’s needed.
Checklists are going to become your best friend when you’re planning a fashion shoot. You’re going to be making checklists for everything that you’re going to be doing and you’re going to be going back to those lists a few times to ensure that everything is done, and everything is ready for the shoot.
The day before the shoot the entire team started prepping for the shoot. Everyone helped each other to make sure that everyone’s “station” that they were overseeing were set up and that they could just get started the day of the shoot. We made sure that all the garments were steamed properly before the day of the shoot and we laid out all the accessories for each look according to our shot lists.
The day of the shoot we got to the location a hour before the shoot started to double check that everything is ready for when the photographer came and we also asked our models to be there a half an hour before the shoot started so that we had enough time to do their hair and make-up.
Each director had to go through all the poses that their models were going to be doing before hand so that the models could just strut their stuff without taking up too much time struggling to figure out what to do. While the director was busy with his/her shoot everyone else carried on with their jobs.
